Jessie B. asked a question to Debbie F.
Hi,
Tough one to answer as no 2 days are the same, one of the reasons why I enjoy what we do in the Premises function.
Generally my day will consist of about 5 meetings on average, earmarked time for project updates, completing actions or forthcoming preparations for a key activity, project planning and forecasting. Nearly all of this typical day is dedicated to looking ahead but there is a good dose of day to day operational stuff in there and there will be at least one catch up to do with systems administration or detailed planning and preparation for a significant change or outage most days. Much of my typical day involves catching up or updating stakeholders or colleagues within the FM world as well as working with my team to help provide priority and direction as required. Sometimes through this will come urgent operational requirements or technical incidents. Such moments will invariably require everything else to be put on hold, so a rapid and dynamic response can be made to the evolving situation and normal operations restored as soon as possible. Thankfully this doesn't happen that often and good training and preparation as a team with a hefty dose of experience helps resolve these situations quickly, whatever their nature.
We try and use office tools as much as possible, to cut back on the number of meetings required to update colleagues and management by keeping one source of information always up to date on a daily basis. So if urgent or the latest updates are needed, they can just dip in and check up on the item(s) in question. We are currently trying to make the Tasks App within Teams do this for us.
The short answer to what is a typical day in my role? - working with and managing people at all levels in as many different ways as possible, to keep things on track or to plan.
This will sound like a cop out... everyday is different! It's one of the things that I enjoy about my role and working here, everyday really is different. The core themes that run through many of my days include:
1. Meetings with senior stakeholders to better understand their priorities, concerns, suggestions and how the programme I'm leading can best support their needs.
2. 1-2-1 and team meetings with my direct reports on a range of topics including; performance against objectives, mental well-being, career development, personal goals and what we can do to make the company a better place to come to work in.
3. Portfolio Leadership calls with my peers and our Portfolio Director to optimise the performance of the portfolio.
I hope that gives some insight into a typical day for me here
Warmest regards
Tim
My day-to-day role differs depending on which rotation I've been in. However in my current rotation in Change Management I complete tasks from 3 different teams (PMO, Design and Change Mgt). On a weekly basis I have 2 1-2-1 catch ups with my manager. I have a project brief I usually follow with all my tasks and deliverables. I tend to alternate each working day depending on the tasks. I dedicate one full day to each task, then I dedicate Friday to studying for my Yellow Belt qualification. Here, no day is ever the same. I have great flexibility. I'm able to go to the gym on my lunch break and complete my tasks simultaneously.
The thing I really like about my role is that every day is different.
My priority is always my team - how are they feeling, is the work on target, what are the blockers they are experiencing and can we find a way round them. Once the team are happy, I also have to look at priorities from a work point of view. Being part of a bigger Group the work can come our way via various routes so its making sure everything can be achieved or, where it can't be, managing stakeholders expectations.
Around this I can also build in time for other tasks such as project work or personal development. All colleagues are given time each week to use for personal development if they want to. This allows us to focus on what is important to us, as well as working towards business goals.
As you can see, its a very varied role which keeps you motivated and passionate about what you do.
I work in a hybrid capacity, so there are days I spend in the office, and days I spend working from home.
When I am in the office, my days include time spent at my desk working on the tasks for which I am accountable, attending meetings both virtually and in person, and the occasional catch-up over coffee if someone I work with in some capacity happens to be in the office on the same day. When I am working from home, my days include time spent at my desk working on the tasks for which I am accountable, and attending meetings virtually.
The structure of my day can vary greatly, there are days where I have no meetings and I spend my full day at my desk working on numerous tasks, while there are other days where I have a number of meetings and spend more time in meetings than I do at my desk. No two days are the same given the variety of work completed in the team, and the number of meetings I attend. The numerous tasks we are involved in means you grow your network quickly in this role.
